    PROGRAMS — YOUTH INTERNSHIPS

New Perspectives Theatre works with high school and college students so they can learn first-hand about the technical and administrative aspects of the not-for-profit theatre community through structured internships. The program places an emphasis on recruiting minority interns and helps to improve their communication, organizational and conceptual skills, and provide a mentoring experience for young people who may lack positive relationships with adults. Undergraduate and graduate students from Hunter College, NYU, Antioch College, Rutgers University, Philadelphia's University of the Arts, and Savannah College of Art & Design have participated in the program. 10th-12th graders from the School for the Physical City, Bronx Lab School and the Settlement College Readiness Program have also been interns in the past. See what previous interns have had to say about their experience!

    MEET OUR SUMMER 2008 INTERNS!

ASHLEY LYNETTE BROWN (Development Intern) is thrilled to be one of the newest members ofthe NPT family. Ashley attends New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts as a drama major and hopes to double major in Psychology. Her big dream is to become a world-renowned and well-respected actress/singer and she draws her inspiration from theatre and screen actress, Anna Deavere Smith. Ashley has performed at Westchester Broadway Theater, the legendary Stone Pony, and CBGBs, and she has performed at charity benefits for renowned artists, such as Maya Angelou. Her television credits range from Nickelodeon’s G.A.S. to Burger King and Verizon commercials. As the new development intern, she hopes to gain as much knowledge as possible so that she can further the mission and growth of NPT, and one day start her own theatre company. She is thankful to Melody, Shykia, and Jenny for welcoming her with support and open arms.

LINDSEY MARIE MCKITTERICK (Women's Work Lab Assistant) is a senior at Fairfield University, CT, where she studies Television and Theatre. She has performed in both professional and community theatre since age eight, and has worked as a musical theater coach at children’s theatre camps throughout her home state of NH for the past three summers. During her junior year, Lindsey became interested in women’s studies through "Project Peg", an on-campus organization that explores women’s issues through art and performance. During 2007-2008, Project Peg focused mainly on feminism and its relation to the Fairfield campus. Members conducted interviews and passed along journals to faculty and students asking them various questions about feminism. Lindsey and nine other performers then organized the text and devised a twenty-minute piece exploring the different stereotypes and definitions of feminism.  “Resurrecting the F –word” was performed as part of Theatre Fairfield’s “A Class Act.”  Through this experience, Lindsey realized the importance and beauty of a sisterhood and became truly passionate about her work with women’s issues. Lindsey is thrilled to be working at New Perspectives and admires the organization’s commitment to promoting female-generated work. She hopes to use her experience in film and theatre to continue to raise awareness for women’s issues.

MONIQUE ROBINSON (Arts-in-Education Intern) is a senior at Smith College, double majoring in Theatre and Government. She is a native Floridian and has spent most of her life in the city of Fort. Lauderdale. During the fall of her junior year, Robinson enrolled at Queen Mary University of London, where she studied Drama and Politics. Robinson has had several leading roles in many Smith College theatrical productions and play readings including: Golden Girls, Dust, Dogeaters, Cinders, Tattered and Torn, and The Golden Lotus. In addition to her academic accomplishments Robinson is the Black Student Alliance Vice-Chair, a member of the Theatre Honors Department, a proud member of Smith Improvisational Komedy Organization of Smith, a Christian, daughter, sister, friend, dancer, activist, and humanitarian.

ATHENA ROQUE (Costume Design Intern) is very excited to serve as NPT's new costume design intern! She lives in New York City and attends the Art Institute of New York City as a second year fashion major. She aspires to become a well-renowned and respected costume designer in the theatre industry. Athena hopes to use her experiences at NPT to learn more about costume design and catapult her into a world of success. She would like to thank Shykia and Melody for giving her this opportunity.
