WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT!

MEET OUR AMAZING ACTING STUDENTS!

Helen, Sandina and Kwame will spend four weeks in residence at Adelphi University, where they will work up to 12 hours each day on their craft—attending classes in acting, movement, voice and speech, scene study and improvisation. A major part of their education will include interaction with professional actors, directors, designers and playwrights from Circle East Theatre Company (Artistic Director Emeritus, Michael Warren Powell). Special workshops will include stage combat, comedy, directing, mask, playwriting and tango. This year, the program will celebrate the life and work of playwright Lanford Wilson.

Helen Barnes is a 10th grader at School for Classics.  She was born in Kingston, Jamaica.  At the age of 9, she decided to become an actor. She describes herself as “seemingly serious and quiet, but also creative, smart, determined and genuine.” She enjoys writing poems, drawing, performing, seeking new adventures, and reading. Helen played the role of Helena in A Midsummer Night’s Dream at SFC. She believes once you have the passion for something with all your heart, it will always make you happy.  She has definitely found passion in acting!

Sandina Hines is an honors student in the 11th grade at School for Classics. She was born in Jamaica and migrated to the U.S. in 2009. She describes herself as “very responsible and glad to accept any challenges that come [her] way.” She played Hippolyta in A Midsummer Night’s Dream and the Nurse in Romeo and Juliet at SFC. She is excited about the NYSSSA School of Theatre because she believes it will help her socially and creatively as she learns the fundamentals of theatre. She loves to help people and make them feel welcome. Her plan for the future is to attend college and study business administration.

Kwame Simpson is an 11th grader at School for Classics. He was born in New Amsterdam, Guyana. Kwame played Lysander in A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Mercutio in Romeo and Juliet. Kwame has a natural talent for accents and physical comedy. His plans for the future are to study theatre in college and graduate school and eventually act on Broadway and in movies.
