|Theatre Without Boundaries!|
NPTC has been developing new plays since its founding in 1992. In that time more than 20 original scripts have received development support through residencies, dramturgical services, workshops and full productions. The PlayGround provides a specific mission through which future new plays will be accepted for development outside of our Women’s Work and Voices From the Edge programs.
The PlayGround is New Perspectives Theatre Company’s new play development program and its mission is to serve the Audience by growing diverse, imaginative, and inclusive plays, which, as a body of work, describe our national spirit and experience. Our unique search for plays is governed by the belief that an authentic and vital national theatre must respect all the traditions from which it grows as well as invest in its own transformation. The PlayGround accomplishes this by:
The PlayGround is founded on faith that a community is strengthened, inspired, witnessed, and changed by its Theatre and that the future of American Theatre lies in bringing principled, experimental work to its mainstages.
The PlayGround finds and develops new work each season, pairing great ideas that speak to our mission with talented and professional collaborators who bring these ideas to life on stage. Pieces are already scripted, commissioned by NPT or submitted by artists to The PlayGround for development. New work in varying stages of growth is presented to the public throughout the season in ongoing workshop forums, using the presence of and feedback from our diverse New Perspectives Audience, a microcosm of the national community, to bring each new piece to harvest.
Throughout the year and during our annual Summer Harvest festival, visionaries from the non-profit and commercial producing communities are encouraged to come to join the public at The PlayGround to find the next play for the American canon. In some cases we are simply soliciting feedback for play development from those professionals who know best what the American Audience craves; in others we are looking for a patron or partner who believes in the work and can offer resources for the continued life of a production. In all cases, The PlayGround aims to grow new works to the point at which they are ripe for professional production for a national audience.
The PlayGround was created in 2004 and grew out of previously developmental work. Already, 13 plays have been “planted”, and over 500 Artists and Audience members have collaborated in the growth process.
PLEASE NOTE THAT WE ARE NOT CURRENTLY ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS TO THIS PROGRAM. WE ARE ONLY DEVELOPING NEW WORK THROUGH THE WOMEN'S WORK LAB AND VOICES FROM THE EDGE.
