VOICES FROM THE EDGE XII

The New Perspectives Theatre Company is pleased to present its 12th Voices From the Edge Festival celebrating new works by African American writers and performers.  The Festival runs Wednesday, June 16th to Sunday, June 21st, with performances at 2:00pm, 5:00pm and 8:00pm.

This year, the festival features three original works that span 150 years of Black History.  Daniel Carlton, our first-ever VFE artist, returns to perform two of his one-person pieces on alternate evenings: Memory of Self: Journey to Weeksville and a new work-in-progress A Block of Time: 70 Years on One Harlem Block, which chronicle the lives of individuals in historical Weeksville and Harlem at different points in time. Hip-Hop and Spoken Word Artist Dyalekt performs Square Peg Syndrome, which debuted in Prague at the Divadlo Archa and was most recently performed in St. Croix.  Big Man: Issues. Affirmation. Destiny is a collaboratively created play with music by Roland Hayes Robinson and Wyatt Jackson exploring the challenges and sterotypes confronting contemporary Black men.

A special post-performance Panel will speak on opening night, June 16th, addressing the question: What is The Current Landscape for African American Theatre Artists?  Where have we come from and how far is there still to go?.  Confirmed panelists at this time are Daniel Carlton, Woodie King, Jr., Artistic Director of the New Federal Theatre which celebrates its 39th season this year; and Charles Weldon, Artistic Director of the ground-breaking Negro Ensemble Company, founded in 1967.
